Dovetail Designs - Custom Kitchen Cabinets

Feature 5 | Selection of Five Images From my Latest Product Shoot

This Feature 5 showcases a custom-built kitchen cabinet installation in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The cabinets were built and installed by the talented Dan Brantner, owner or Dovetail Design. Dan adds a little bit of history about Dovetail Design and his personal philosophy behind his impeccable craftsmanship.

“The name Dovetail Design is a reflection of a philosophy about quality and craftsmanship I learned many years ago. That philosophy says that if something is worth doing, do it right or don’t do it at all.
I started Dovetail Design after growing frustrated as a carpenter by the underutilization of the skills I have gained over the years while in the construction trade. I also wanted to be able to take on more challenging projects and allow my creativity to grow. There is something very rewarding and gratifying about conquering a challenge that at first glance looks very difficult if not impossible to do. Dovetail Design combines two things I love to do, cabinet making/woodworking, and finish carpentry.

While working with wood by definition requires the ability to cut corners, I do not believe the same should hold true for maintaining a high standard of quality in craftsmanship. It is for this reason that I prefer to work with Dewitz Photography as well as other professionals, who share the same philosophy about quality. This is also the reason why I choose to use some unique cabinet making methods. Things such as building the cabinet box entirely from ¾” plywood (behind the solid wood face of course) instead of using it only for certain parts of the cabinet, (which is a very common method of cabinet building).  This makes them exceptionally strong (so strong in fact they can cause the wall to deform slightly). In addition, the shelves all have solid wood edging on the front instead of a thin veneer, which allows me to give them a nice rounded profile.

The dovetailed drawers all get nice rounded edges as well. Paying attention to the little details in the design also, including keeping the reveals between each door and drawer identical (wherever possible), makes for a nice customized flow.

One of the cool and creative aspects of building custom cabinetry is the opportunity to incorporate modern technology. New developments in LED lighting have opened up a whole world of possibilities, as well as incorporating flat screen TVs, cell phone/I-pad charging stations (currently I am developing an idea to conceal a charging station within the cabinet) into the cabinets, not to mention the myriad of storage organizational accessories. In addition, modern technology allows computer generated design in 3D, and photorealistic renderings that look absolutely stunning.”

I. Love. Photography. I love it. It lightens my heart, fills my soul, and allows me to capture life the way that I see it. I constantly yearn to show life in a way that hasn’t been seen before, to bring images to people in a fresh and innovative way. My favorite focus in photography, my specialty I guess you would say, is Railroad Photography & Art. Something about the rumbling of these great, big, beautiful machines. The way they shake the earth beneath you as they rumble by, how they invade your chest and you can feel the rumble inside you. The plumes of heat on a hot day represented in a heat wave. Snaking through a western valley, void of trees or any other distracting element. Just the train, by itself, in it’s own inexplicable beauty and power. From the time I was a child, they have captured my imagination. I’ve recently gotten into portraiture a bit, and I want to bring some of my experiences with trains to that arena. To capture the power of a person, the sadness, loneliness, omniscience, pride, love, & carefree spirit in a way that hasn’t been done before. I want people to look at themselves in a photograph I have taken, and see a side of themselves that they think no one else has ever seen. Dewitz Photography is all about capturing a moment in a way that has never been seen before, capturing a beauty that some never knew was even there.
